How to play
You start your prison record at San Quentin by choosing the size of your stake. The minimum this can be is £0.20, and the maximum is £32. This a one-fee slot as there are a varying amount of paylines on each spin. When you have selected your fee, hit the spin button.
You need to land a minimum of three identical symbols in sequence across the reels to land a winning payout. The row each symbol lands upon does not matter – as long as they are in sequence then all is good.

Bonus features
Enhancer Cells
Above and below each reel there are locked enhancer cells. When they open they will reveal one of the top five paying symbols or a Wild, Razor Split or xWays symbol. A Razor Split symbol will split all symbols on the reel below into two identical symbols. The xWays symbol reveals identical regular paying symbols stacked four symbols high.
Bonus Symbols
The bonus symbol can land on any reel in the main game but only on reels with unlocked Enhancer Cells during Lockdown Spins. If you land one or two bonus symbols in the main game they become wild and the Enhancer cell will be unlocked. Land three or more to trigger Lockdown Spins.
Split Wild
A split wild can land on any reel during the main game. All symbols on the same reel are then split.
Lockdown Spins
You will receive two less Jumping Wilds during Lockdown Spins as the number of bonus symbols you landed to trigger them. All Enhancer Cells opened by the bonus symbols remain open during the game. The number of spins and the special symbol multiplier are both random and awarded before the start of the spins. If you land further bonus symbols during your lockdown spins then you are awarded another Jumping Wild.
The number of spins you are awarded is determined by the sum of the numbers revealed in the first three opened Enhancer Cells. You can land mystery inmate symbols during lockdown spins which will be revealed to be one of the named inmates in this slot or a Jumping Wild.
Jumping Wilds
After each spin, a Jumping Wild will jump to a new position on the reels. If it lands on a Razor Split enhancer then the value of the Jumping Wild multiplier will double. The maximum value of a multiplier is 512x, and you cannot have more than three jumping wilds on the reels at the same time.
Psycho Manhunt
If you reach over 150,000 times your stake via Lockdown Spins then the feature ends and your maximum win of 150,000 times your stake is awarded.
Graphics and Sounds
There is kind of a cartoon theme to San Quentin that’s not quite a cartoon theme. If you’re a gamer you might recognize it as a style commonly used in video games, and in particular the Borderlands series. The game is played against a backdrop of the prison wall (we assume at San Quentin) – thankfully the walls are topped with razor wire. The rest of the action is pretty static although symbols do shine and flash when they are involved in a win, or if they trigger a bonus feature.
The game is played against the backdrop of a musical theme that is half soft rock and half a gentle California vibe. The reels click as they roll around, and the cells clunk nicely as they open. In a nice touch, police sirens sound if a bonus feature has a chance of being awarded.
Conclusion
San Quentin is certainly not for the easily offended (one of the inmates is called ‘Beefy Dick’ after all) and it may not be for those put off by complicated slots. It plays well but the features promise more than they deliver. It is, though, easy to work out precisely just what is going on once you have taken this slot for a couple of dozen spins or so.
